Understanding nahb® model green for new home construction

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), through its Model Green Home Building Guidelines, is designed to move home building toward a more environmentally-friendly standard.

Local Home Builder Associations (HBAs), in cooperation with individual builders, can utilize these guidelines to help create voluntary HBA-driven programs based on seven primary principles:

  • Lot Preparation & Design
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Water Efficiency & Conservation
  • Occupancy Comfort & Indoor Environmental Quality
  • Home Owner Guidance on How To Optimally Operate & Maintain the House

While not having its own specific category, paint selection is weighted in the green building guidelines based on the levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The intent is to reduce the amount of VOCs released to the outdoors and to reduce the formation of ground-level ozone.

Paint VOC Targets:

  • Flat Interior Latex Coatings: <100 g/L
  • Interior Oil-Based Paints: <380 g/L
  • Non-Flat Interior Latex Coatings: <150 g/L
